Adventures in FOIA

I’ve been going back and forth with the FBI in attempts to get their files on Elizabeth Dilling, a white supremacist whose lists of progressives in government, education, and culture were used by the FBI, the American Legion, and other blacklisting organizations in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

After two previous letters informing me that they did not have any files on Elizabeth Dilling, I received this puzzling letter, in which they move from pissy to absurd (we lost the letter D). Now, I know they have information on Dilling — she was one of the defendants in the Great Sedition Trial of 1944 and she wrote a series of batshit crazy anti-Semitic letters to J. Edgar in the 1950s (he had pretty much cut his losses with her after she became an early Holocaust denier). As my friend, the King of FOIA requests puts it, either the FBI was doing their job in the 1940s or they’re not being forthcoming.

Judge for yourself.
