Last week, organizers filed union authorization cards signed by a majority of faculty members. Today, faculty members received an email from the president of the university senate, ostensibly demonstrating how sparse faculty support for the unionization effort is. Less than fifty percent of faculty responded to the survey, that according to them yielded the following result:
Hard to square these results with what the union is saying.
Why we need this union: grievance procedures, hanging onto health care benefits (eroded this year due to the neutrally worded “changes” in coverage), and having a measure of job security for NTTF faculty members. It’s no magic bullet for the problems ahead, but the union is going to offer some protections, particularly for those who are the most vulnerable.
