On Why Downton Abbey Doesn’t Make Me Cry

I have to admit that I don’t really understand why Downton Abbey is all the rage right now. It’s pretty in a kind of vapid Howard’s End way. Oh, and the servants are so cheeky and white and that class thing is so, well, British. And all the men, so strangely virile in their myriad colonialist guises.

Here’s the deal: I think that it’s kind of creepy that in the midst of this bloody recession, in the wake of this fall’s Occupy movement, during an era of perpetual war, there should be so much pomp and circumstance about British aristocrats and their servants during the “Great” war.
